The newly tenured rising star at BCSSW continues to be in demand for her unique approach to promoting effective social work with systematically oppressed populations in higher education.
On November 11th, BCSSW was honored to hear from the NIJ’s communications director on “Turning Powerful Ideas into Meaningful Change: How to Translate Research to Support its Use,” offering specific techniques to the social worker or academic seeking to advocate for new policy based on study findings.
Since arriving on campus in 2012, Afua Laast has been hard at work in her ambitions to build a more just community at Boston College. Last year, she was acknowledged with both a Heights Momentum Award and an Ever to Excel honor for her ongoing commitment to promoting dialogue around issues of race, sexuality, and disability rights.
Dispatches from the Field is a monthly feature at Innovate@BCSW designed to showcase the school’s commitment to field education, and to fostering fruitful relationships with organizations, both in Boston and around the world, who are providing critical services to those living at the margins of society.
Leaders in the field participated in a panel discussion that addressed the exploitation of immigrants, including fraud, scams, and financial threats to the foreign born living in America, as well as resources for lawyers and social workers working to mitigate these threats.
